Rulings

Quick reference for commonly looked up rulings, by category/keyword:

Protection

Protection protects you from being:

  • Damaged by
  • Enchanged/Equipped by
  • Blocked by
  • Targeted by
whatever you are protected from. Wither / Infect are also protected against because they "deal damage in the form of" their respective forms.

You are NOT protected from spells that do not specifically target a creature/player. For example, a creature with protection from white would still be destroyed by Wrath of God (it doesn't TARGET the creature; it deals no DAMAGE to the creature), and a creature with protection from black would still be sacrificed by Diabolic Edict if the player chose to sacrifice it (spell targets the PLAYER, not the creature).

Planeswalker

Planeswalkers uniqueness is confined to each player. That means Player 1 can have Jace Beleren and Player 2 can have Jace, the Mind Sculptor in play at the same time. If a single player plays two Planeswalkers of the same subtype, that player chooses which one to put into the graveyard.

Damage that would reduce the life of a player can be redirected to that player's planeswalker instead.

Legendary Rule

Legendary uniqueness is confined to each player. That means Player 1 and Player 2 can both have Avacyn, Angel of Hope in play at the same time. As soon as a player gains control of another one (whether though cloning, mind controlling, or creating a token copy), that player chooses one to put into the graveyard.

Turn order / Priority

When deciding who has priority, follow the APNAP rule: Active Player, Non-Active Player

Turn order:

  • Untap Step - Untap all valid permanents
  • Upkeep Step - Pay any upkeep costs
  • Draw Step
  • Main Step 1 - Play land / spells
  • Combat Step:
    • Beginning of Combat - Chance to play instants / abilities before combat
    • Declare Attackers
    • Declare Blockers
    • Assign Damage
  • Main Step 2 - Play land (if not done in Step 1) / spells
  • End Step - Last chance to play instants / abilities

Timing / Stack

Spells get placed on the stack and resolve in reverse order and the timing can change the outcome of battle. A contrived example:

  • Player 1 has Mother of Runes on the battlefield.
  • Player 2 Doom Blade's Mother of Runes
  • Player 1 responds by tapping Mother of Runes and giving it protection from Black
  • If Player 2 does not have another Doom Blade or other removal spell or cannot play any more cards, the spells resolve in reverse order: giving Mother of Runes protection from Black, then Doom Blading an invalid target
Now if Mother of Runes tapped for protection BEFORE the Doom Blade:
  • Player 1 has Mother of Runes on the battlefield.
  • Player 1 taps Mother of Runes to give it protection from Black
  • Player 2 responds by casting Doom Blade on Mother of Runes
  • If Player 1 does not have a way to counter Doom Blade, provide protection to Mother of Runes again or cannot play any more cards, the spells resolve in reverse order: Doom Blade destroys Mother of Runes (both go to the graveyard), Mother of Runes ability gives protection to an invalid target and does nothing.
